Wound Care Instructions Following Shave Biopsy
Remove the Band-Aid or dressing the next day. If there is bleeding into the bandage, a new bandage may be applied anytime.
Bathing is permitted on the day after the surgery. Soap and water are no problem but avoid scrubbing the wound.
Cleanse the area with tap water on a Q-tip once daily. Follow the cleansing with the application of a small amount of Vaseline or Aquaphor healing ointment (available in most drug stores without a prescription). The biopsy site should be covered with a Band-Aid.
After three to four days, the wound may be slightly red around the edges and moist in the center. This is not uncommon and is part of normal healing. It should improve by the fifth to seventh day.
This topical wound care should be continued until the wound has completely healed; approximately 2-3 weeks.
